"Flat is for Sissies" - Thunder Road Shirt
I signed up for Thunder Road three weeks before race day. Obviously, there wasn't much of a training plan. I was hoping my good performance in Chicago would translate to a sub-two hour half but no such luck, however it was a new PR. Maybe if Cody & Meredith had run this one with me...
The course wound through some Charlotte's nice neighborhoods. It was a smaller race, so spectators & activities were scarce (and thankfully unnecessary) but the highlights were a sign reading "pain is temporary, internet results = 4ever," two buses of volunteers hanging out the windows high fiving runners, pep bands, and, of course, the free massage tent at the finish line.
The only bad part of the race was the awful on-course musicians. They were playing this acoustic indie music that kind of made me want to lay down in the grass beside the course. Maybe they're to blame for me missing my goal? It certainly didn't help. But I can't complain too much about a time of 2:03:37. It's more than nine minutes less than my last half marathon.
Cody ran the 5K in 23:31 which put him 28th of 394 and 2nd in his age group. Of course, he didn't get anything because we totally missed the announcement and didn't know where he'd where he'd placed until we were in the car on the way home, looking it up on my smartphone.
