We're Idiots!

This morning (it's Sunday) our alarm went off at 4:30 AM.  No, not a leftover from a weekday (where, sadly, a 4:30 alarm is a very real possibility) but we'd actually set it the night before.  And, after going back to bed for ten minutes, we did actually elect to get up and get ready.

We drove up to join a 12 mile run at 6:00 AM in 30 degree weather.  The true idiot run is actually 19.7 miles to the top of a mountain, but it's intended for those doing the upcoming full marathon.  We are only doing the half and chose the shorter option (which doesn't include a t-shirt, since you're not quite a big enough idiot, but did include oreos and chocolate milk at the finish).

The first half of the run was quite fun and the miles flew by.  We started off running with a crossfit nut intending to prove that a crossfit person can run 20 miles with no endurance training.  I enjoy crossfit but their doctrine of being able to run on no endurance training at all pisses me off.  Is it possible?  Yes, but there are also people out there that can run marathons off the couch.  Is it healthy or going to lead to your best performance.  In my opinion, no.  Just the lack of experience with running puts you at a disadvantage (this guy's friend had to tell him not to run the thing in brand new shoes).  We traded a few good-natured barbs but I'm satisfied that he'll pay for it later.

Next, we fell in with Highlighter Barbie and Black Ninja.  They were hilarious.  They treated us to a commentary of all of the most awful races in the immediate area.  Their pace was pretty fast but the entertainment factor drove me to keep up with them and made the miles much less painful.  Unfortunately, they were total idiots and we separated at the turnaround.

When we started back, we couldn't help looking around.  We were the first to hit the turnaround and start heading back.  We took several short walk breaks but it was still quite awhile before we even saw anyone behind us.  On one of our walk breaks, it felt like my hamstring froze up.  And my butt was ice cold the entire time.

Cody:  So slapping it would be a bad thing?
Me:  You would get punched.

We made it into town solidly ahead of the next group (5 mins or more) so there were plenty of oreos and chocolate milk waiting for us (as well as other selections, but those were the ones I went for).  There was ice is some of the drinks (not on purpose).  We stood around the portable heater with the volunteers for awhile socializing, before heading home for a nap.
